30 Second CSR Wisdom- From Rio+20

“Money matters and especially for the poor. But once you reach a certain level of wellbeing, the additional gains are very small and perhaps not there at all. The US has tripled its per capital GDP over the last 50 years but there has not even been a twitch of the needle in raising well-being.”

“Second, people are, like Aristotle said, social animals. We depend on our sense of participation in communities and if there is a lack trust, our lives are miserable, and if we live in unhappy places where people do not co-operate with each other and altruism is not a moral virtue that is defended, where cheating is rife and pervasive, then unhappiness soars and this is one of the most important findings of US sociology over the past 25 years.”

“I deal with a number of businesses that I admire because they are better diplomats than the state department as they are actually doing things rather than talking about them. They are getting real things done,”

20 Second CSR Wisdom

We’re not citizens anymore; we’re consumers. The government views us as consumers, and our economy is based on us consuming and discarding. That behavior is destroying the planet. How can we use the power of consuming to do some good? I introduced the concept of the sustainability index, and Patagonia is working with 40 clothing companies, including Walmart, to implement it. In the future, customers will be able to zap their iPhone and find out just how a clothing article was made. The index will give a grade, and suddenly the consumer is armed with information. Some jeans, for example, will have a score of 10, some a score of 2. I think it’s going to be the start of getting away from consuming as recreation.

GBS Good Reads: CSR, Sustainability, Literature and Life

This week has been busy and lazy (the two are not always mutually exclusive, trust me). I haven’t done much reading and Twitter has been kind of slow too. But like I said in my last GBS Good Reads Post, some reads just stick with me despite all the craziness going on around me. So without further ado, here is my second dose of Good Reads:

The Good Read: 12 Ways to Spot A Liar At Work

The Phrase that Stuck:

In business dealings, the best way to understand someone’s baseline behaviour is to observe her over an extended period of time. Note her speech tone, gestures, blinking patterns, etc. Once you’ve assessed what is “normal” for a co-worker, you will be able to detect shifts, when her body language is “out of character.” Just remember (and this is key), that the atypical signals you detect may be signs of lying — or a state of heightened anxiety caused by many other factors. 20 Second CSR Wisdom

When I first introduced that (sustainability) report—I think around 2000—I was blasted by the business press. They asked, “Why would you criticize your own performance?” We said in the report, here’s where we’re falling short, here are the challenges ahead of us, and check in with us next year to see how we’re progressing. I personally came under a lot of criticism. People said this was the stupidest thing they had ever seen. They thought I was an idiot. It was very controversial when we did it. Now it’s become much more widely accepted. For us, sustainability in its broadest sense is about economic sustainability. It’s not just about sustainability for environmental reasons—if you don’t have a sustainable business model, none of the rest matters. Sustainability is also about having the right employees.

GBS Good Reads: CSR, Sustainability, Ethics and Business

During the course of a day, I read upwards of 50 new articles, studies, papers, blog posts and random client related stuff. It is no wonder that I look like the dude in the picture when the day ends. Flicker Creative CommonsBy the next day however, I don’t remember half of them. GBS Good Reads is a list of the other half; the half that sticks with me for its simple yet profound message. This is the stuff that I insist on discussing with my husband (poor him), the stuff I forward to my friends and post on my facebook page (sometimes more than once). I want to share these here in the hope that you will enjoy and learn from these as much as I did. So, here goes: Continue reading
